“I remember Associate Professor Gilbert Chiang as someone knowledgeable and affable. He impressed me with his humility, despite being a senior colleague. The Chinese term 不耻下问describes him aptly. He shared his knowledge freely and consulted juniors without hesitation because he believed everyone has something meaningful to contribute,” shares Adjunct Associate Professor Alwin Loh.
A/Prof Chiang was A/Prof Loh’s mentor when the latter joined SGH in 2000. A/Prof Chiang set up the Renal Pathology Service in SGH and taught Dr Loh renal pathology. The apprentice went on to take it up as a subspecialty and trained in this discipline under the Healthcare Management Development Programme.
A book given by A/Prof Chiang which Dr Loh has kept as a memento.
With his quest for knowledge, A/Prof Chiang was also known to be someone who sat for many examinations. During his time, he established links with the various Pathology Colleges and got the Department of Pathology at SGH accredited as a training centre, uplifting Singapore to the world stage of pathology diagnostics.
He chaired many important and high level medical organisations, and before his illness was the Master-designate for the Academy of Medicine Singapore. Another notable accomplishment was his role in acquiring the first electron microscope for the Outram campus.
Associate Professor Gilbert Chiang, Emeritus Consultant and former Head of the Pathology Department in SGH passed away peacefully on 25 January 2018, after a lengthy illness. His family establishes the Gilbert Chiang Shih Chuin Bursary to honour his passion in nurturing the younger generation and his role in postgraduate medical education.
