About SGH Orthopaedic Surgery Department

At the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in Singapore General Hospital, we are highly committed to our vision, mission and values, ultimately aimed at transforming and enhancing lives through providing top-quality and patient-centric orthopaedic care.

Our Mission

To provide high-quality, patient-centric and values-based orthopaedic care to our patients, achieving this through the pursuit of excellence in clinical care, research and education

Our Vision

To be the premier orthopaedic department in the region and beyond, leading innovations and breakthroughs in clinical care, research and education

Our Values

Integrity, discipline, patient-centredness, compassion, respect and collaboration.

Diverse Talent Pool

We have an experienced team of 45 specialists, including 20 senior consultants. Our medical professionals work very closely with dedicated teams of nurses, allied health professionals and administrators to ensure complete care of our patients. Our department consists of seven orthopaedic subspecialty services, each consisting of clinicians practicing at the highest level in their respective fields to provide top-quality and comprehensive care to all our patients. These services include Spine, Adult Reconstruction, Sports Medicine, Trauma, Musculoskeletal Tumor, Foot & Ankle and Acute Care.

Clinical Experience

We are a high-volume orthopaedic department, providing orthopaedic care to about a quarter of the patients nationwide. This amounts to handling more than 126,000 outpatient visits and performing beyond 8,000 surgeries per year.

Integrated Facilities

We believe in being with the patient every step of the way, from consultation to rehabilitation. As a fitting testament, we are the only orthopaedic department internationally to offer a unique suite of clinically-audited pre-surgery, surgery and post-surgery care programmes. This is accomplished through well-designed clinical pathways and care integration, stringent internal and external clinical care audits and our world-class Orthopaedic Diagnostic Centre (ODC).

The Orthopaedic Diagnostic Centre (ODC) tracks clinical outcome measures during pre- and post-operative functional assessments of our patients. These measures have been benchmarked against internationally-published data from leading orthopaedic centres in the world and thus serve to audit the high clinical workload performed.

The department sees up to a quarter of all orthopaedic patients in Singapore, and operates its outpatient clinics out of a few locations, namely, The Musculoskeletal Centre (MSC), H Clinic and the Orthopaedic Sports and Joint Centre. We are eagerly awaiting the opening of our new clinics at the state-of-the-art orthopaedic and rehabilitation facility in the Outram Community Hospital.

Many internationally-published papers have established that the treatment of sports and joint conditions in high-volume centres, which incorporate clinical pathways and integrated teams, show better clinical outcomes, and the department prides itself in demonstrating excellent patient outcomes in many international and regional papers it has published over the years.

Trendsetters & Early Adopters of Advanced Technology

We strongly believe in harnessing advanced techniques and technology to improve patient care, and in the value of collaboration with leading biomedical companies to develop such new techniques and technology. Our specialists have been quick to introduce and adopt new technologies in orthopaedics, scoring many firsts in the country and region. For this reason, we are currently recognized as the leading centre in the region for minimally invasive orthopaedic and robotic surgery.
