Navigating Immuno-Suppressants with Ease (NAISE)

Synonym(s):

4 July 2024

Drug interactions are often observed in transplant patients due to polypharmacy. Following transplantation, patients are required to take an initial medication regimen comprising a calcineurin inhibitor, an antiproliferative agent and a corticosteroid to prevent organ rejection. In addition, prophylactic anti-infectives, stress ulcer prophylaxis and maintenance medications for underlying chronic diseases contribute to the typical drug regimen of a transplant patient.

This lecture will discuss the pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) principles of immunosuppressants (IS) and provide insights into navigating drug interactions, including dose adjustments, therapeutic drug monitoring and alternative therapies.  Pharmacists will be equipped to optimise drug therapy to ensure patient safety and efficacy in the face of complex drug regimens.

After the lecture, the participants will be able to gain an understanding on:

  • PK and PD principles of IS
  • Common drug-drug and drug-food interactions with IS
  • Strategies to navigate drug interactions
