The lecture explores the basic physiology of how our circadian rhythm works. It discusses the common causes of sleep problems among the elderly, the current available pharmacological management for elderly with insomnia and their adverse effects. The lecture also reviews the pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to insomnia management. Participants will be introduced to the newer drugs (Circadin and Lemborexant) for insomnia which have come aboard Singapore in the last few years.
After the lecture, the participants will be able to gain an understanding on:
- Causes of insomnia among the elderly – the forward shift of circadian rhythm and changes in melatonin production with ageing
- Causes approach in insomnia treatment – the non-pharmacological cognitive behavioural approach and introduce the new sleep medications available for insomnia treatment
