Journal Critiquing: Going Beyond the P-Value – A Re-Run

In this era of evidence-based medicine with rapidly evolving evidence, it is pertinent that clinicians are well-versed in critical evaluation and appraisal of literature and evidence that is presented.

Journal club presentations are a useful platform to keep abreast of new developments, and engage fellow practitioners in interaction and discussion on the clinical question which is explored through the research presented in the journal article.

In this short lecture, we would go through key elements of how to prepare a journal club presentation to achieve a critical understanding of the results beyond p-value interpretation.

After the lecture, the participants will be able to gain an understanding on:

• Selecting a journal article suitable for journal club presentation or discussion
• Using PICO to frame the clinical question
• Evaluating a journal article systematically
• Debunking common misconceptions and misunderstandings about p-values and some common biostatistics
• Shortlisting resources to improve in biostatistics and keeping yourself updated
