Prof Guy Brusselle
Head of the Department of Respiratory Medicine, Ghent University Hospital
Professor of Medicine, Ghent University, Belgium

Guy Brusselle received his medical degree (M.D.) at Ghent University in 1990. Investigating the functional role of cytokines interleukin-4 (IL-4) and interleukin-5 (IL-5) in allergic asthma, he obtained his Ph.D. in 1997. As a respiratory physician with a keen clinical and scientific interest in asthma, severe asthma and COPD, he joined the Ghent University Hospital in 2002. Since 2008, he is professor of medicine at Ghent University, teaching “Methodology of Scientific Research and Study design” to medical students and pharmaceutical sciences students. Since 2021 he teaches the course “Respiratory Medicine” to master medical students at the Faculty of Medicine.

Since 2013, he is professor at the Departments of Epidemiology and Respiratory Medicine at Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam in the Netherlands, where he is the Principal Investigator for Respiratory Diseases within the Rotterdam Study, a large prospective population-based cohort study. Currently, he is head of the Laboratory for Translational Research of Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases at Ghent University.

From 2012 to 2015, he has served the European Respiratory Society (ERS) as Guidelines Director. From 2016 till 2019, he has been the chair of the ERS Science Council. From January 2023 till December 2024, he has been the president of the Belgian Respiratory Society (BeRS).

Since September 2017, he is member of the Scientific Committee of the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA). In 2018, he has joined the Board of Directors of GINA

Presenting Title:

Precision Medicine in Asthma: Integrating Biomarkers, Risk Stratification, and the Latest GINA Insights
Asthma care is undergoing a paradigm shift driven by advances in molecular phenotyping, biomarker‑guided treatment strategies, and evolving international recommendations. In this keynote lecture, Prof. Guy Brusselle will explore how precision medicine is reshaping clinical practice across the asthma care continuum. Prof. Brusselle has authored more than 450 peer‑reviewed publications and has significantly advanced understanding of cytokine pathways, type‑2 inflammation, and biomarker‑driven treatment responses in asthma.  His research spans key domains including type‑2 biomarkers, eosinophilic and non-eosinophilic phenotypes, and the role of biologics in severe asthma management.

Drawing on his role within the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) Scientific Committee and Board of Directors, Prof. Brusselle will highlight the most recent GINA strategy updates and their practical implications.  He will discuss how validated biomarkers—including eosinophils, FeNO, and emerging molecular signatures—can enhance risk stratification, optimize therapeutic selection, and guide personalized therapeutic pathways.

Attendees will gain an integrated understanding of how precision medicine can improve outcomes, reduce exacerbations, and refine treatment decisions in diverse asthma populations. This session will equip clinicians with actionable insights into biomarker utility, evolving phenotypic classifications, and evidence‑based approaches that are shaping the future of asthma care.
