Enteral Nutrition

Malnutrition is often an unrecognised risk in hospitalised or nursing home patients. It has been reported that approximately 30-55% of hospitalised patients are malnourished. Nutritional status may be further compromised in hospitals or nursing homes due to poor feeding.

Nurses and Healthcare Assistants are actively involved in feeding patients, be it serving meals or administering feeds via the tube. Enteral Nutrition is the delivery of nutrients directly into the stomach, duodenum or jejunum.

These healthcare providers play a vital role in ensuring appropriate care in tube feeding; therefore, it is important that they are equipped with skills in managing enteral nutrition. This will help to reduce the risk of malnutrition in long term hospitalised patients or nursing home residents.
