Department of Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy aims to help you to optimise your mobility, function and independence.

Physiotherapists work with the multidisciplinary team of healthcare providers in SGH to provide holistic care that is aligned with our patients' goals. We perform thorough assessments and design individualised treatment plans that may incorporate manual therapy, exercises and/or the use of electro-physical modalities to optimise recovery.

Department Profile

SGH is the largest acute care tertiary hospital with the largest Physiotherapy department in Singapore.

The department consist of over 130 physiotherapists, including therapists with specialist training, and 50 support staff which support the 29 medical specialties in the hospital.

Our Physiotherapists are graduates of local or overseas physiotherapy program. A good proportion of our physiotherapists have Master degree or PhD in specilised fields.

Clinical Services

The Physiotherapy Department at SGH provides a comprehensive range of rehabilitative services which put us on the forefront of physiotherapy in Singapore and the immediate region. Our facilities and state-of-the-art rehabilitation equipment ensures that our patients receive the highest level of care available.

Physiotherapists work in the wards, looking after patients admitted to the hospital, as well as run outpatient clinics in SGH, LIFE Centre and Rehabilitation Associates.

The department has pioneered a number of significant physiotherapy services such as 24-hour intensive respiratory care; pulmonary rehabilitation; ergonomics consultation; lymphoedema therapy; vestibular rehabilitation; extended service at Accident and Emergency for musuloskeletal injuries; and provides the most comprehensive burns and wound care management.

Our Physiotherapists are involved in regular in-house training and professional courses to upgrade our skills and knowledge. Senior staff with post-graduate qualifications are involved in conducting specialised skills-training courses and workshops locally and in the region. Our department is also actively involved in providing clinical education to physiotherapy students, allowing them to integrate knowledge and skills attained from their academic studies in a clinical setting.

To improve the standard of our evidence-based clinical practice and quality of our Physiotherapy services, our Physiotherapists are also involved in doing clinical research and quality-improvement projects. We have received several research grants in support of our research projects. Our current projects are in:

  • Health and Wellness in older adults
