Imaging of the chest is a useful resource for pulmonary conditions and is an invaluable tool for physiotherapists when used appropriately. Chest X-ray, Computed Tomography (CT) Thorax, and more recently Lung Ultrasound are prime examples of diagnostic imaging that facilitate accurate problem identification, prognosis, assessment, intervention, and monitoring of therapy outcome that the chest physiotherapists address on a daily basis.
The ability to identify the presence and sizes of pneumothorax is important when implementing positive pressure therapy. Studies (Ball 2018) have showed that final year physiotherapy students were not able to reliably interpret Chest X-ray. The recommendation is for newly qualified physiotherapists to undertake additional training in Chest X-ray interpretation.
