Communication Strategies When Listening And Talking To Children And Adults With Hearing Loss

This CPD lecture introduces the audience to the principles of Auditory-Verbal Therapy which is an evidence-based approach for teaching children with hearing loss to listen and talk. Universal Newborn Hearing Screening started in Singapore in 2002 and congenital deafness is reportedly the most common birth defect in Singapore. As more than 90% of children with hearing loss are born to hearing parents, the natural mode of communication for hearing parents with their child is through spoken language.

Auditory-Verbal Therapy principles have also been adapted to support aural rehabilitation for adults who lose their hearing later in life due to diseases, side effects of treatment, prolonged noise exposure and natural process of ageing.

The audience will learn various strategies that can help them when communicating with children and adults with hearing loss. There is also the opportunity to engage in role-play of scenarios.
