The cervical (Pap) smear is a screening technique to aid in the detection of abnormal cells in the cervix that may indicate the presence of cancer or cancer precursors of the uterine cervix.
The clinical importance of PAP smear includes early detection and prevention of cervical cancer, identifying infections and inflammation and screening for Human Papillomavirus (HPV).

(Do not use lubricant as it will affect the quality of the smear prepared).
The principle involves collecting a sample of cells from the cervix and then examining them under a microscope to identify any cellular changes.
