Functional & Reconstructive Urology

Functional Urology

The Department of Urology has vast expertise in the management of functional and reconstructive urology conditions. Functional urology is a vast sub-speciality that aims to evaluate and treat abnormal urinary function to restore normal voiding in men and women of all age groups. Reconstructive urology on the other hand is the arm of urology that involves surgery to repair structural damage or defects in the urinary tract.

Our Functional Urology team offers a complete range of treatment options for these conditions, including minimally invasive, robotic surgical options and multi-disciplinary care. These are a non-exhaustive list of services that we provide:

Functional urology

  • Evaluation and management of lower urinary tract dysfunction
  • Urodynamics (UDS) services including Video UDS
  • Management of urinary retention 
  • Basic and advanced Overactive bladder management including botulinum toxin  injection, Posterior tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS)and surgical options
  • Underactive bladder management including continence nursing services 
  • Evaluation and treatment of nocturia
  • Evaluation and treatment of bladder pain syndrome & chronic pelvic pain including trigger point massage and extra-corporeal shockwave treatment
  • Continence Nursing Services including patient education of pelvic floor exercise, bladder training, clean intermittent self-catheterisation, long term catheter care, trigger point massage etc.

Neuro-urology 

  • Evaluation and management of neurogenic bladder, functional voiding disorders 

Reconstructive Urology

  • Upper tract urinary reconstruction including ureteric & bladder reconstruction 
  • Pyeloplasty for pelvi-ureteric junction obstruction 
  • Definitive surgery of ureteric strictures including ureteric reimplantation, replacement with bowel
  • Initial and advanced management of anterior and posterior urethral strictures. 
  • Management of post prostatectomy incontinence including artificial urinary sphincters and male slings 

Female Urology

  • Evaluation & management of recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Bladder prolapse including pessary insertion and surgical repair
  • Female urinary incontinence surgery 
  • Fistula repair (vesicovaginal fistula & ureterovaginal fistula)
  • Excision of urethral diverticulum
  • Management of female bladder outlet obstruction 

Adolescent Urology

  • Transitional of care from paediatrics surgery for adolescents with complex congenital urological disorders including spina bifida, bladder extrophy, hypospadias, etc.
