Major and complex surgeries are being more routinely performed these days. There is a substantial body of literature examining the pre-operative, acutely postop and subacute care of the surgical patients. The pathophysiology and the clinical predicting model for postoperative pulmonary complications will be reviewed. This course aims to equip physiotherapists with knowledge and skills necessary to manage the complex surgical patients, in particular, the obese, elderly and frail surgical candidate. Subspecialized care for patients who underwent head and neck surgery, lung surgery and solid organ transplant will also be covered. The emerging evidence supporting the roles of physiotherapy in the peri-operative period will be explored.
