Local Anesthesia Techniques for Foot and Ankle

To learn different injection techniques (e.g. ring block, skin infiltration) for local anaesthetic in the context of podiatric practice.

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate the indications/contraindications for local anaesthetic injection therapy in the lower limb.
  2. Critically appraise the pharmacological principles surrounding the safe use of local anaesthetics for injection.
  3. Demonstrate advanced anatomical knowledge associated with local anaesthetic injection administration.
  4. Learn different techniques (eg. ring block, skin infiltration) for different procedure (nail surgery, wound debridement, wart treatment).
  5. Effectively communicate with patients & colleagues the role of local anaesthetic injection therapy.
  6. Clearly identify appropriate pre and post injection care.
  7. Safely carry out the pre-requisite number of injections, including appropriate aseptic technique.

Dr Kevin Koo Oon Thien

Dr Kevin Koo is a fellowship-trained Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Director of Foot and Ankle Service at the Singapore General Hospital.  He is an Adjunct Assistant Professor with both NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine as well as Duke-NUS Medical School. He completed his medical training with the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2003. He was appointed as Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK, in 2009 and subsequently as Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK (Orthopaedics and Trauma) in 2014. He also obtained his Master of Medicine (Orthopaedic Surgery) from the National University of Singapore in 2013 and was appointed Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore in 2015.

Dr Koo did a one-year fellowship under the Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) Award at St. Mary's and Charing Cross Hospitals, Imperial College Healthcare in London, UK, where he worked with internationally recognised surgeons and participated actively in the management of elite athletes and professional dancers.

His practice interests include foot and ankle surgery, joint replacements, sports and minimally invasive surgery. He has presented extensively at international, regional as well as local conferences including the prestigious American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). He has also published in various peer-reviewed medical journals, and is actively involved in the training of junior doctors.

Dr Adeline Leong Xin Yu

Dr Adeline Leong received her MBBS degree from Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine of the National University of Singapore in 2011. She obtained her Masters of Anesthesiology degree in 2015 and completed Anaesthesia Residency in 2017. Dr. Leong is currently an associate consultant in Anaesthesia and Pain Management. Besides working as an anesthesiologist in both the operating theatre and pain management center, she is involved in the Anaesthesia Education Academic Clinical Programme (ACP) and Simulation ACP as the head of the Simulation Education Subcommittee with organization of Duke-NUS students’ anaesthesia postings and educational simulation activities for residents and students.
