Patients suspected of having current Zika virus infection.
(a) Blood. 5 mL of blood in 2 plain blood tubes (yellow top) or 2-3 EDTA (lavender top) tubes. (b) Urine. Collect the first 10 - 20 mL of voided urine in a plastic, preservative-free sterile container.
Please note that Zika virus RNA is only readily detectable in blood samples of non-pregnant individuals in the first 3-5 days of illness, and reliably detectable in urine samples from day 3 to day 10-14 of illness.
For all pregnant women, we recommend testing on both blood and urine samples regardless of the day of illness or exposure.
Please note test runs on urine and blood are charged separately.
Refrigerate sample until transfer to laboratory. Do not freeze. Send sample at 2 - 8°C (with an ice-pack) and sample must reach the lab within 24 hours after collection.
