Life’s challenges can take a toll on a person’s mind and body. 
 
Major stressors such as death, divorce, job loss, chronic illness, and even daily stressors can overwhelm you and affect both your psychological and physical health.

What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a general term for addressing mental health concerns. It is also known as therapy or counselling.
During therapy, you'll learn about your condition, your moods, feelings, thoughts and behaviours. 
Therapy helps you learn how to respond to challenging situations with healthy coping skills.

How can a Psychologists Help you

To manage your life better by helping you create strategies that build resilience deal with difficult thoughts and feelings that affect your day-to-day functioning and relationships.
 
Identify your problems and figure out ways to best cope with them, to change unhealthy behaviours and habits; and find constructive ways to deal with a situation that is beyond your control.

What to expect when you see a psychologist …

Frequency of sessions 

It depends on each individual case and may occur on a weekly/fortnightly/monthly basis.
Each session will last for 50 to 60 minutes. A minimum of  8 to 12 sessions are needed but therapy may take longer depending on individual circumstances.

Confidentiality

The content of therapy sessions is confidential between you and the treatment team at SGH. 

Limits to confidentiality are as follows:

 If you disclose anything that indicates risk to your own safety or that of a third party, confidentiality will be breached.
Your psychologist may at times discuss their concerns with your parents, If you are a child/teenager at risk.
