Synonym(s):
For detection of Norovirus RNA (genogroups I and II) during acute infection for diagnosis and during recovery phase to monitor shedding for infection control purposes where applicable (typically 7-14 days of shedding in an immunocompetent adult).
(a) Stool (preferred sample): Collect a pea-sized amount and send to the laboratory in a sterile leak-proof screw-capped container without any media. (b) Rectal swab (accepted only if no stool is available): Use Dacron-tipped swabs. Place the swab into swab sheath or sterile container without any media.
Refrigerate sample until transfer to laboratory. Do not freeze. Send sample at 2 - 8°C (with an ice-pack). Sample must reach laboratory within 24 hours after collection.
