Indications

Specimen Required

​5 mL plain blood.

This test is carried out only on screened reactive / equivocal samples. Samples submitted by a referring laboratory must be accompanied by screening results.

Storage and Transport

​Refrigerate samples if delay in transporting to laboratory is anticipated. Do not freeze.

​HIV antibody differentiation assay (Western Blot / Line Immunoassay)

  • HIV-1 / HIV-2 POSITIVE OR POSITIVE (non-typeable)
     
  •   Inconclusive
    [May indicate early infection in those with recent significant exposure. Consider PCR if appropriate and repeat screen in 4-6 weeks.
    For low risk individual, this may represent non-specific reactivity, repeat screen in 12 weeks.]
     
  •   Indeterminate
    [Likely non-specific reactivity in the absence of significant risk factors / exposures. Repeat screen in 12 weeks (after window period for this assay).]
     
  • Negative
    [No evidence of specific HIV antibodies detected.]
     
  •  Uninterpretable
    [High background reactivity – unable to read confirmatory test. Please repeat screen.]
