The Department of Renal Medicine has a long heritage of excellent clinical service, on a backdrop of teaching with clinical and basic research. It provides consultancy services to 2 of the major general hospitals in Singapore and receives consultations from patients not only within Singapore but from the ASEAN region and beyond. Its mission continues to be provision of world class clinical services along with the research in both basic and clinical sciences.

Clinical Services

The Department sees a wide range of renal disorders, from the early phases of renal disease to patients newly presenting with end stage renal disease. It maintains the most comprehensive nephrological service in Singapore. The various sub-specialty services include:

Clinical Nephrology Service

  • Manage patients with all types of renal diseases, hypertension, electrolyte disorders, kidney stones and cystic kidney diseases.
  • Emphasis on management of patients with diabetic kidney disease, with the aim of retarding progression to end stage renal failure.
  • 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring service.

Glomerulonephritis and Renal Vasculitis Service

  • Provides in depth consultations on management of all aspects of glomerulonephritis, from explaining biopsy results to treatment options including immunosuppression.
  • Examples of diseases managed include IgA Nephropathy, lupus nephritis, primary glomerulopathies (minimal change disease, focal segmental glomerular sclerosis, membranous nephropathy) and renal vasculitides.
  • Active in translational and clinical research to improve patient care. Offers participation in selected promising clinical trials.

Low Clearance Clinic Service

  • Multidisciplinary clinical service for patients with advanced chronic kidney disease.
  • Single stop clinical service providing holistic medical care by a team of renal physicians, renal coordinators, social workers, pharmacists and dieticians. Care is provided in the same sitting without requiring multiple visits for each discipline.
  • Patient centric care to better educate and prepare patients for timely preemptive renal transplantation or initiation of renal replacement therapy.
  • Offers opportunity for advanced care planning.

Renal Bone Service

  • Provides comprehensive care for patients with chronic kidney disease and associated renal bone disease. This includes the whole spectrum of Chronic Kidney disease-Mineral Bone Disorder (CKD-MBD).
  • Expertise ranges from looking after CKD patients with osteoporosis or recurrent fractures to those with secondary/tertiary hyperparathyroidism.
  • Calciphylaxis management, in collaboration with the department of dermatology.
  • In post solid organ transplant patients, we also work closely with our osteoporosis experts from the department of endocrinology to provide comprehensive investigation and treatment for post-transplant patients with osteoporosis or bone related problems.

Renal Transplantation Service

  • Evaluate and prepare potential candidates for renal transplantation or living kidney donation
  • Perform ABO and HLA incompatible kidney transplantation and paired kidney donor exchange
  • Evaluate, diagnose and manage complications of renal transplantation
  • Provide complex immunosuppression and transplant related support services for other transplant programs
  • Provide care and follow-up of living kidney donors
  • Deliver multidisciplinary patient counselling and education

Peritoneal Dialysis Service

  • Offered as a home-based renal replacement therapy option when renal transplantation is being awaited or not an option. Peritoneal dialysis is the better choice for preservation of residual renal function.
  • Provides training and care for the patient opting for this gentler form of dialysis therapy while promoting a patient tailored peritoneal dialysis schedule, more flexible in nature. This helps in the preservation of patient independence and freedom.

Haemodialysis Service

  • The Singapore General Hospital (SGH) pioneered haemodialysis in Singapore since 1961, establishing Singapore’s first dialysis unit in 1969.
  • Our Renal Department continues to run the largest inpatient dialysis center in an acute hospital.
  • Provides comprehensive state-of-the-art, 24 hours in-center dialysis for patients admitted to SGH. We perform all types of renal replacement therapy, including acute intermittent haemodialysis, haemodiafiltration, slow low efficiency dialysis (SLED), isolated ultrafiltration, plasmapheresis and high cut-off dialysis in patients with myeloma kidney.
  • Haemodialysis Disease Management Clinic provides a multidisciplinary outpatient support for patients dialyzing at the various satellite dialysis centres in Singapore.

Critical Care Nephrology Service

  • Led by nephrologists who have special interests in critical care medicine, acute kidney injury, acid-base balance, fluid and electrolyte disorders.
  • Provides acute extra-corporeal blood purification services, for critically ill patients with acute or chronic kidney injury admitted to the Intensive Care Units (ICUs), High Dependency Units or Intermediate Care Areas (ICAs).
  • Therapies provided include continuous renal replacement therapy -  continuous venovenous hemodiafiltration (CVVHDF), continuous venovenous hemodialysis (CVVHD), continuous venovenous hemofiltration (CVVH), therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE), liver dialysis (MARS – Molecular Adsorbent Recirculating System), prolonged intermittent renal replacement therapy (PIRRT), amongst others.

Interventional Nephrology Service

  • Coordinates the care and management of haemodialysis patients with vascular access issues.
  • Conducts diagnostic and therapeutic endovascular access procedures in our newly built, dedicated Interventional Nephrology Suite.
