Who is at risk of having dysphonia?

Dysphonia is defined as a disorder of the voice, which involves any change in voice quality, pitch, or loudness that affects a person's ability to communicate at home and in work or social environments.

Who is at risk of having dysphonia?

Professional and occupational voice users are at risk of developing dysphonia through misuse or overuse of the voice. Dysphonia can also be a result of direct trauma to the larynx (voice box), or caused by certain medical conditions.

How can a Speech Therapist help me with my dysphonia?

The treatment is dependent on its underlying cause(s) and symptoms.

During the initial assessment session, your therapist will conduct a detailed case history to better understand your voice concerns and usage, a physical examination of your larynx, and a voice evaluation through various vocal tasks.

The therapist will also discuss with you your therapy goals and provide education on vocal wellness. If suitable, subsequent sessions will focus on specific techniques and exercises for vocal rehabilitation.

What can I expect at the Specialist Voice clinic?

A visit at the Specialist Voice Clinic involves a consultation, video-endoscopic and video-stroboscopic examination of the larynx, acoustic analysis of the voice signal, and undergoing treatment if necessary.

How long will the treatment process take?

Each session will range from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on your needs. The number of sessions required is also dependent on the severity of your dysphonia and your progress. If you are unable to attend therapy sessions face-to-face, they can be conducted through a video-conferencing platform. You may discuss further with your Speech Therapist during the initial visit for more information.

How can I obtain an appointment to see the Speech Therapist?

You will require a referral letter either from the Laryngologist at the Specialist Voice Clinic or a general ENT physician, made out to SGH Speech Therapy Department. Please call SGH Central Appointment's Hotline at 63214377 to make an appointment.
