Physiotherapy for Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a chronic disease characterised by pain and physical disability, with the knee being the most frequently affected joint.

A United Nations report in 2010 showed that osteoarthritis is a leading cause of disability amongst people aged 60 years and over. Numerous studies have shown that exercise plays an important role in managing osteoarthritic symptoms. Strengthening muscles can improve physical function without increasing pain or medication use.

In SGH Physiotherapy Department, we provide you with a personalised evidence-based management plan with the aim of assisting you to achieve your goals and return to your functional activities. Your physiotherapist will advise you on the necessary treatment options which may comprise of specific exercises that target strengthening the muscles, stretching tight soft tissues, and improving balance.

Knee Buddy App

Tailored for our local community, the Knee Buddy is a mobile application that provides information about knee osteoarthritis, exercises and available treatment options. “Why a mobile app and not a booklet?”, you might ask. Smartphones are part and parcel of our lives now and we believe that with mobile technology, we are able to extend the reach of our care well beyond the doors of the hospital.

The Knee Buddy also seeks to empower the consumer or patient with knowledge of the disease and available treatment options such as conservative management, where various exercises are used for managing the condition, and surgical management and what to expect thereafter.

In the near future, the Knee Buddy will be upgraded to allow patients to customise, with the help of Physiotherapists in Singapore General Hospital, their exercises to manage their condition.
