Enquiry on Orthopaedic Services

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in Singapore General Hospital is the oldest and most established orthopaedic department in the country, offering comprehensive consultation and treatment services for individuals suffering from musculoskeletal disorders.

With our patient-centred focus and years of experience, we understand the challenges our patients face. Our patients are guided by experts through the entire process, from consultation to rehabilitation. At the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery we offer a complete, one-stop-solution to meet the needs of the patient in a single, convenient location for additional peace of mind.

At the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery of the Singapore General Hospital, we are committed to enhancing lives through top quality patient-centred orthopaedic care. We are the largest and most established orthopaedic unit in Singapore, and many local and regional patients count on us to guide them along the path to recovery.

Common Vision

We are unified by the common belief that the patient comes first. We will spare no effort to render the necessary support to the patient and his or her loved ones during the difficult period of treatment and recovery.

Diverse Talent Pool

We have an experienced, multitalented team of medical professionals, comprising no less than 28 specialists including 11 senior consultants and 2 Emeritus Consultants. Our unit consists of six services: Spine, Adult Reconstruction, Sports Medicine, Trauma, Musculoskeletal Tumor and Foot & Ankle.

Clinical Experience

The Department attended to 126,000 outpatient visits per year, representing 18.6% of all outpatient visits in the entire SGH. We average about 1,500 total knee replacements per year and did over a thousand spine surgeries in 2017. This volume keeps our specialists current, and is testament to our capability.
Integrated Facilities

We believe in being with the patient every step of the way, from consultation to rehabilitation. That’s why we are the only orthopaedic department internationally to offer a unique suite of clinically audited pre-surgery, surgery and post-surgery care programmes. This is accomplished through the coupling of our Orthopaedic Diagnostic Centre (ODC) and the Musculoskeletal Centre (MSC).

The Orthopaedic Diagnostic Centre (ODC) tracks clinical outcome measures during pre and postoperative functional assessments of our patients. These measures have been benchmarked against internationally published data from the leading orthopaedic centres in the world and thus serve to audit the high clinical workload performed.

The Musculoskeletal Centre (MSC) is the first team-based centre for bone, joint, muscle and associated disorders. Combining the expertise of our consultants and other professionals, MSC serves as a one-stop centre for orthopaedic treatment.

Trendsetters & Early Adopters of New Technology

We strongly believe in the value of collaboration. The Department has partnered with leading biomedical companies (Zimmer, Johnson & Johnson, Stryker, AO) to develop new techniques and technology.

Our specialists have been quick to introduce and adopt new technologies in orthopaedics, scoring many firsts in the country and region. For this reason, we are currently recognized as the leading centre in the region for minimally invasive orthopaedic surgery.

Academic Contributions

The Department is firmly committed to teaching students from various institutions, with the intention of keeping the level of expertise high.

We have Professors and Lecturers appointed by both medical schools in Singapore – the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School. We also support instruction at the MSc programme in Biomedical Engineering at the Nanyang Technological University.

The Department is committed to Post-Graduate Professional Training, each year we train 32 medical officers and six Registrar.

A strong alumni also exists, with more than 140 fellows from Asia, Africa and the Middle-East having been trained here since 1976. We regularly organise state-of-the-art surgical training courses for international surgeons and have been chosen as the training centre for many subspecialties. We have:
  • AO Centre for Singapore for trauma
  • SGH-Zimmer Satellite Institute
  • Singhealth-Johnson & Johnson Clinical Fellowship programme for SE Asia for spine, sports and arthroplasty
