In 2021, Singapore General Hospital (SGH), celebrates its Bicentennial which also marks 200 years of Medicine in Singapore.

1821, two years after the landing of Stamford Raffles, Singapore’s first General Hospital started life in the humblest manner – a wooden shed in the cantonment where British troops were situated. From caring for British and Indian soldiers who came with Raffles’ party, the hospital evolved to provide modern medical services to serve the residents, touching the lives of generations of staff, patients and Singaporeans.

The history of SGH intertwines with historical events in Singapore. While providing public healthcare has always been its core function, it has responded to other needs such as caring for soldiers during World War II, attending to victims of riots and other national disasters as well as training generations of healthcare professionals.

Today, Singapore is often cited for its world class healthcare system, where public hospitals provide superior quality of care that is accessible to even the needy. SGH is the fount and keystone of medicine in Singapore. This is the legacy that we are proud to uphold and continue, beyond 200 years.

​About the Illustrator

Lee Xin Li graduated with an architecture degree from the National University of Singapore. Based in Singapore, Xin Li often draws his inspiration from the environment he grew up in such as the culture, food, architecture and history he has encountered. Some of his notable works include the Kueh series and Peta Singapura.
