Family Medicine

The Family Medicine Residency Program at SingHealth is a three-year program that aims to train competent family physicians to provide personal, primary, comprehensive and continuing care to patients in the community. The residency program will also provide a good foundation for those who wish to work in a non-ambulatory setting as well as those who plan to pursue specialty or subspecialty training in geriatric medicine, palliative medicine, and sports medicine.

Residency training is provided through a structured curriculum that includes clinical training, didactic lectures, tutorials, workshops and project work.

Core rotations include Medicine, Pediatrics, Mental Health, Geriatrics, Emergency Medicine and Polyclinics. Elective rotations include Surgery, Orthopedics and O&G. Supplementary attachments include Eye, ENT, Dermatology, Palliative Care and GP clinics. Clinical sessions at a Family Medicine Centre will be a key feature from Residency Year 1.

Residents will also learn minor surgical procedures, communications, quality improvement, evidence based medicine and teaching skills through workshops and project work.

Besides traditional competencies of medical knowledge and patient care, other core competencies such as professionalism, interpersonal skills and communication, practice-based learning and systems-based practice will be taught and assessed.

All Residents will have an assigned Family Medicine mentor from the first year. With regular feedback from formative assessments of the core competencies, residents will be enabled to take on graduated responsibilities, including supervisory and teaching roles.
