Intensive Care Medicine

Anaesthesiology residents training in their intensive care rotations will benefit from SingHealth's strengths in clinical service, education and research, deriving its diversity from its multidisciplinary approach to patient care. Residents will be expected to assume graduated responsibilities in managing complex critically-ill patient in the peri-operative phase. Being the largest group of hospitals with the highest volume of surgeries as well as inpatients, residents will gain in-depth clinical exposure to a wide variety of critical-ill patients across all specialties.

Anaesthesiology residents will be rotated through the Surgical ICU, Neurosurgical ICU and Burns ICU in SGH and CGH, each with its specific learning objectives. The faculty consists of consultant intensivists have obtained intensive care medicine training and qualifications in Europe, Australia and USA. They are spread over SGH, KKWCH and CGH and have
consistently being engaged in teaching and are dedicated in mentoring the residents.

Residents will have ample opportunity to obtain hands-on experience in the placement of invasive lines such as arterial lines, central venous catheters, dialysis catheters, as well as the use of advanced hemodynamic and respiratory monitoring and support, renal replacement therapy, cerebral monitors, bedside bronchoscopy and transthoracic echocardiography. The residents will also aid in resuscitation both in the ICU and other inpatient wards. This practical experience is complemented by a comprehensive teaching program consisting of didactics (Intensive Care Medicine Teaching Series) and bedside teaching.
