About Skin Bank

Background

The Skin Bank was established in 1998 by the Burns Centre at Singapore General Hospital (SGH). It is located within the burns ward in SGH and is part of the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery.

Objectives

The Skin Bank aims to provide a ready source of clinically safe human donor skin to treat severe burns.

Need for skin donation

Since 1998, the Skin Bank has had an average of 7 deceased donors per year. Each year the demand of donated skin to treat massive burns patients exceed the skin supply donated by our local skin donors.

This is why increasing awareness and public education is important. An increased awareness of skin donation will hopefully increase the number of local skin donors overtime.
