Dr Dawson earned his Ph.D. in Pharmacology at UNC-CH and was a Clinical Medical Genetics Fellow at the Duke Medical Center.  His 30+ year career has focused on drug development in a variety of disorders.  He identified a novel proto-oncogene, merTK, now a drug target for childhood leukemia, and the Genetech drug Myozyme, a treatment for Pompe Disease.  Tom spent 17 years in P&G Beauty, understanding and intervening in skin, hair, and scalp disorders including aging, dandruff, and hair loss. He received the John Smale Award as P&G's Top Technologist 2002.  In 2013 he relocated from Cincinnati to Singapore to lead development of the Singapore Innovation Centre life sciences unit.  In 2015 Tom joined A*STAR to develop hair and skin health programs, currently leading the A*STAR cutaneous microbiome program ("Asian Skin Microbiome Program"), seeking to define healthy skin.  Tom also retains his emphasis on Malassezia, leading the global the "Malassezia Research Consortium".


Tom is the President of the Singapore Society for Skin Research, Vice Chair of Mycology and Eukaryotic Microbiology, IUMS,  Academic Editor of PLoS 1, and Chair of the A*STAR SRIS Human Biomedical Research Act committee. He is also the CEO of a private consulting firm, Beauty Care Strategics, consulting with multiple multi-national and local entities.
