Stroke Club
The Stroke Club was jointly set up by the Singapore National Stroke Association (SNSA) and the Singapore General Hospital. The SNSA was established in 1996 by stroke survivors, caregivers, medical personnel and health sciences professionals to provide pyschological support for stroke survivors and care givers. SNSA is also a charitable organisation affiliated to the national Council of Social Services and its activities are focussed on facilitating positive post-stroke adjustment.
It has been reported that more than 55% of the rehabilitation stroke population in Singapore experiences depression. The Stroke Club helps to provides a forum and resource centre where stroke survivors and care givers can come together can share their experiences with one another and better understand the psychological aspects of stroke.
It also address psychosocial issues that the staff in the hospitals are unable to do once stroke survivors are discharged from hospital stay. Evidence shows that early resolution of these concerns will lead to speedy recovery, and the support group environment helps facilitate stroke survivors' re-integration into society. The Stroke Club also functions as an educational centre where medical and other allied health personnel reinforce the importance of managing risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes and obesity.
If you are a stroke survivor, caregiver or know someone who has had a stroke, please come along to our next support group meeting . . . . .
