The Singapore National Stroke Association Stroke Club is jointly set up by the Singapore National Stroke Association (SNSA) and Singapore General Hospital. The SNSA is established in 1996 by stroke survivors, caregivers, medical personnel and health sciences professionals to provide psychosocial support for stroke survivors and caregivers. The SNSA is a charitable organisation affiliated to the National Council of Social Services. Its activities are focused on facilitating positive post-stroke adjustment.
WHAT IS A STROKE CLUB?
A place where stroke survivors share their experiences with one another, it is designed to be:
- a support group that will facilitate stroke survivors to re-integrate into society
- an educational center to reinforce the importance of managing risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus and obesity
- a resource center for stroke survivors and caregivers to better understand the psychosocial aspects of stroke
WHY IS THERE A NEED FOR A STROKE CLUB?
It has been reported that more than 55% of the rehabilitation stroke population in Singapore experience depression. The stroke club will address these psychosocial issues that the staff in the hospitals are unable to do once the stroke survivors are discharged. Evidence has shown that early resolution of these concerns will lead to speedy recovery as well.
HOW IS THE STROKE CLUB STRUCTURED?
The one-hour stroke club will be conducted once a month. Trained facilitators, including stroke survivors and caregivers, will discuss topics concerning the physical, mental, social, emotional and financial aspects of post-stroke care. The topics complement the medical and rehabilitative services of the hospitals.
The sessions will be conducted in English and Chinese with some dialects and Malay if the need arises.
