Neonatology

The Department of Neonatology provides a comprehensive range of care to the newborn, from normal to intensive care of both inborn and outborn infants. In collaboration with the obstetric service, the Department provides a wide range of services: perinatal services which include pre-conception and prenatal counselling, care of the high-risk pregnancies and intrapartum management; Birth Defects Clinic; Child Development Unit and Neonatal Follow-up Programme.

The Department also organises the "Light-Weight Club", a parent support group where parents share their experience and support for one another to cope with the problems of caring their high-risk infants.

There are 2 levels of care provided for the newborns.
  • Intensive Care ( Level 3 ) - an intensive care nursery which provides continuous management by the medical and nursing team.
  • Special Care ( Level 2 ) - a special care nursery which provides continuous close observation and treatment for neonates who do not need the intensive care therapy.
The nursery is located at Block 5 Level 4 and is managed by senior nurse manager and supported by a team of nurse clinicians, registered and enrolled nurses. The team of nurses provide quality care and also provide support and health education to parents with high-risk newborn infants.
