The National Heart Centre (NHC) orignated from Singapore Heart Centre. It was set up in 1994, as part of Singapore General Hospital (SGH) comprising Cardiovascular Medicine and Cardiothoracic Departments.
The NHC is dedicated to its mission to rapidly develop the specialities of cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery to the highest level of excellence. Its principal goals are:
- To provide secondary, tertiary and quartenary patient care and excel as a regional referral centre for cardiovascular medicine and surgery
- To serve as a national centre in coordinating cardiac care of the entire nation
- To take a leading role in cardiovascular research, training and development, and evidenc-based practices
Cardiovascular medicine and surgery
The cardiovascular medicine department has facilities for the most up-to-date treatment of acute myocardial infarction and other cardiovascular diseases. It provides prompt and intensive coronary treatment and prevention of complications of cardiovascular diseases, for both local and overseas patients.
The cardiothoracic surgery department is equipped with a 17-bedded cardiothoracic surgical intensive care unit, which provides close monitoring, counterpulsation, ventilatory or inotropic support for both pre- and post-operative patients.
Cardiovascular Laboratory
The cardiovascular laboratory is one of the most active angioplasty centre in South East Asia. It comprises 4 state-of-the-art laboratories, each fully equipped with the latest digital imaging machines to provide enhanced images for instant play back on display monitors. This allows cardiologists to make immediate diagnosis, and facilitate guiding of cardiac catheters.
Cardiac Rehabilitative and preventive cardiology
A comprehensive inpatient and outpatient cardiac rehabilitation and preventive cardiology programme is extended to patients with acute myocardial infarction, coronary intervention procedure, pacemaker implantation, cardiac surgery or cardiac failure including post-cardiac transplants.
