The department’s educational activities not only focuses on both local and overseas medical students but also on postgraduate education of residents and advanced training in Respiratory Medicine and Critical Care Medicine.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

Most of the department's research activities consist of clinical research in the areas of lung cancer, bronchology, asthma, non-invasive ventilation, critical care outcome, obstructive sleep apnea and malignant pleural effusions.

Currently, we are doing the following clinical trials :

  1. Chronic obstructive Lung Disease (COPD)
    UPLIFT Study – multicentre randomised control trial to study a new drug for COPD
    Status – ongoing
  2. Hospital Acquired Pneumonia
    Zephyr Study - multicentre randomised control trial to study 2 antibiotics for nosocomial pneumonial patients
    Status – currently enrolling patients
  3. Community Acquired Pneumonia
    CAPTIVATE Study - multicentre randomised control trial to study a new drug for patients with Community Acquired Pneumonia
    Status – currently enrolling patients
  4. Lung Cancer
    GEL Study – multicentre national trial to study the role of Estrogens and their interaction with Genetic and Environmental factors for Lung Cancer in females
    Status – currently enrolling patients
  5. Acute exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis(AECB)
    ASSET Study – multicentre randomised control trial to study 2 antibiotics in AECB patients
    Status - currently enrolling patients
  6. Smoking cessation
    VARENICLINE Study – multicentre randomised control trial to study a new drug for smokers to quit smoking
    Status – currently enrolling patients
  7. Chronic obstructive Lung Disease (COPD)
    ROSES Study – multicentre randomised control trial to compare 2 drugs for patient with COPD
    Status – upcoming
