Bronchoscopy

The department is the busiest in this country with over 1,000 elective procedures done per year. It is one of the few in the region to provide the entire spectrum of bronchoscopic services :

Flexible Bronchoscopy Service

Diagnostic bronchial biopsy, washing and brushing, bronchoalveolar lavage, bronchoscopic lung biopsy under fluoroscopy, bronchoscopic needle aspiration and biopsy and therapeutic (bronchial toilet, brachytherapy, laser therapy, balloon dilatation) procedures. This is performed mainly in the Endoscopy Centre and is usually done on an outpatient basis. The role of bronchoscopy in Immunocompromised Hosts and patients with respiratory burns have traditionally been the department’s interests.

Medical Thoracoscopy Service

This service provides for the diagnosis and palliation of patients with pleural diseases of various types. It is normally done at the Endoscopy Centre under deep sedation.

Rigid Bronchoscopy Service

Stenting, Nd-YAG laser therapy, removal of foreign bodies and mechanical dilatation of strictures for all malignant and benign causes are performed. This is done under general anaesthesia in the operating theatre.

Whole Lung Lavage

Whole lung lavage for pulmonary alveolar proteinosis under general anaesthesia and double lung ventilation.
