Obesity Management

Globally, overweight and obesity has become a serious public health issue. Research has shown that being overweight and obese increases one’s risk for developing to many chronic illnesses such as diabetes and cardiac diseases. Adopting a healthy lifestyle to achieve meaningful weight loss can significantly reduce the risk of developing these diseases.

The Obesity Unit in SGH LIFE Centre adopts an integrated approach to help you lead a healthy lifestyle and in the process, achieve long-term weight loss and weight maintenance.

Using evidence-based approaches to weight management, our multi-disciplinary team comprising of medical doctors, physiotherapists, dieticians and psychologists will guide you throughout your programme with us in acquiring life-long skills to create a healthier you!

Obesity Management services available in SGH LIFE Centre:

Comprehensive Obesity Management

This 24-week treatment programme is most suitable for obese individuals who are ready to make a change in their lifestyle. The programme comprises of :
  • Individual consultations with the Physician and Clinical Coordinator
  • Individual and group sessions with the Dietician, learning how to adopt a healthier diet
  • Supermarket visit where participants learn to identify healthier food choices
  • Cooking class where participants learn how to cook healthy local foods
  • Group exercise sessions supervised by Physiotherapists with individually tailored exercise programmes
  • Group behavioural modification therapy sessions with Psychologists

Basic Obesity Management

This 12-week treatment programme is designed to facilitate obese individuals in taking concrete steps towards a more desirable body weight and a healthier lifestyle. The programme consists of :
  • Group exercise sessions supervised by physiotherapists
  • Group sessions with the dieticians to learn the basics of healthy eating
  • Group behavioural modification therapy sessions with pyschologists

Dietary Obesity Management

This monthly programme is a series of monthly individual consultation sessions with a registered dietician over a 6-month period. The programme consists of :
  • Individual consultations with Dietician for realistic goal setting, identification of barriers to healthy eating and strategies to overcome barriers and drawing up of an individually tailored balanced diet with appropriate calories.
  • Group sessions where individuals put into practice what they have learned in the form of supermarket tours and healthy cooking classes

Activity-based Obesity Management

This well-rounded exercise programme is designed to support the individual’s weight management goals by providing a conducive environment for safe and effective exercise sessions for a healthier lifestyle. The programmes are available as a package (18 sessions over 3months) or per month (maximum of 20 sessions per month). The programme consists of :
  • A detailed fitness assessment that is conducted by a physiotherapist for individualised exercise prescription
  • Supervised group exercise sessions led by a physiotherapist or a sports trainer to ensure correct techniques.

Patient population: - ONLY relevant to those who have signed up and completed Basic Obesity and Metabolic Management (BOM) OR Comprehensive Obesity and Metabolic Management (COM) packages.

Aim: - Sustainable Weight loss ≥ 10%
- Co-management of other co-morbidities (e.g. Hypertension, Diabetes)

Outcome measures: - Fitness Re-assessment (after 1-2 packages)
- Weight loss (≈ 10% of body weight / 1kg per week)
- ↓ waist circumference (WC)

Exercise testing / Resting Metabolic Rate Assessment

The exercise testing services are offered to assess the individual’s cardio-respiratory (aerobic) fitness levels and also suitability for exercise. This will enable an effective exercise intensity to be prescribed and also ensure safety during the exercise sessions. The individual can choose between a comprehensive fitness assessment involving maximal exercise testing and muscular strength and endurance test or a basic fitness assessment involving sub-maximal exercise testing and muscular endurance test. Resting metabolic rate assessments are also available to accurately evaluate the individual’s daily caloric needs. This will then help the individual plan out a balanced diet with appropriate calories to achieve weight management goals.
