Eating Disorders

Mental health professionals are reporting an increasing prevalence of young persons developing eating disorders. The SGH eating disorders programme at LIFE centre is a dedicated treatment programme for the management of eating disorders such as Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge-Eating Disorder.

The programme addresses the physical and psychosocial problems commonly associated with eating disorders through a holistic approach. Individuals will work closely with our multi-disciplinary team comprising psychiatrists, psychologists, physicians, nutritionists, medical social workers, family therapists, nurses, occupational therapists and physiotherapists.

Treatment Goals

  • To help you achieve a healthy and stable body weight.
  • To normalise eating behaviour.
  • To work through psychological conflicts and issues underlying and maintaining your eating disorders through individual, group and family psychotherapy.
  • To assist your family in providing adequate support for recovery.
  • To develop a structured aftercare programme and relapse prevention plan.

Programmes and services available in SGH LIFE Centre:

Consultation Services

Outpatient consultations with specialist physicians where individuals undergo medical and psychiatric assessments and are monitored regularly.

Inpatient Care

Individuals will be warded over a period of time for comprehensive treatment and care.

Eating Disorders Support Group

Support groups are run concurrently for both patients and their caregivers. Please click here for more information.

Eating Disorders Treatment Programme

The eating disorders treatment programme comprises both inpatient and day patient components. Treatment programmes will be tailored for each individual and may include the following:

  • Supported meals with staff
  • Drug therapy
  • Treatment of associated medical problems
  • Individual psychotherapy
  • Group psychotherapy
  • Psycho-education groups
  • Family therapy
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Activity therapy
  • Physiotherapy
