Sarah’s story

I was 4 ½ years old when I was discovered about my hearing loss. My teacher noticed that I didn’t respond to her when she asked me a question, then she started getting worried about me. So, on the first parent – teacher meeting of that year, my teacher explained to my parents what was wrong with me and then mum and dad decided to take me to my doctor. My doctor said that I had hearing problems so she referred me to an audiologist and he said I had to have hearing aids. I had to do a further test, which meant I had to be sedated. That further test confirmed that I had hearing loss. Once I got my hearing aids I realised that I could hear much better but it took a while to get used to them.

Before I got my hearing aids I had to have my ear-mould made and I didn’t like the way the audiologist put a substance that looked like a piece of soft play dough in my hear. Now I know it is nothing to be afraid of. Now that I have hearing aids I can carry on with my piano, listen to music and talk to friends normally without having to ask them all the time what they were saying. I also had an FM with wires at school for the first year but now I have a wireless FM and it is much better.
