Bringing Festive Cheer to SGH Patients

01 Feb 2011

Patients who have to spend Lunar New Year in hospital will enjoy a little festive cheer with the help of SGH staff and a group of volunteer students.

For the first time, SGH has involved primary and secondary school students from three schools in the Hospital’s annual Chinese New Year activities. The students took time out of their hectic schedule to pack and distribute 3,000 oranges and create calligraphy pieces to extend Lunar New Year greetings to our patients.

Project Oranges
Every year, it is a tradition for SGH’s senior management to give mandarin oranges to our patients in the wards. This is our small gesture to spread festive cheer and well wishes to patients who cannot spend the Lunar New Year with their loved ones at home.  This year, SGH has partnered with three schools for the Lunar New Year Project Oranges.

  1. River Valley Primary School has mobilised more than 50 primary school students to help pack 3,000 oranges into the 1,500 Lunar New Year cheer packs.  These bags were packed on Monday, 31 Jan from 2pm to 5pm.  The students have also been hard at work to produce lanterns which will be used to decorate the halls for the Lunar New Year Concert at SGH on Saturday, 12 Feb. (Pls see story below).
  2. Over at St Joseph’s Institution, more than 30 students have been working over a two-week period to create 1,500 calligraphy pieces to extend Lunar New Year greetings to our patients.
  3. At SGH, more than 30 students from Bukit Merah Secondary will be involved in slotting the calligraphy pieces into the cheer packs and delivering the cheer packs to all the wards on Tuesday, 1 Feb.
  4. On 2 Feb, more than 30 management staff including SGH’s CEO, Chairman Medical Board and other senior staff will be going to all the wards to present the Lunar New Year cheer packs to our patients and extend Lunar New Year greetings to them.

Lunar New Year Concert @ SGH
To usher in the Lunar New Year, SGH has lined up a Lunar New Year Concert @ SGH on Saturday, 12 Feb 2011 from 3pm to 5pm at the SGH Deck on 9 at Blk 7 Level 1.

Jointly organised by SGH Arts and Craft volunteers, patients, visitors and staff can enjoy a stunning lion and dragon dance performance by students from Hwa Chong Institution. Look out for the roving Fortune God, shake his hands or take picture with him for some good luck.

Patients and visitors can also enjoy their favourite melodies played on traditional Chinese instruments by volunteers and be entertained by Chinese folk dances and festive songs to the tune of music.

The event will end with a “Guess the lyrics” quiz and prizes and goodie bags for all participants. Following the concert, there will be a roving performance by the performers at the wards to bring cheer to patients who are unable to go and watch the concert.
