SGH is designated as a Global Hand Hygenie Expert Centre by Professor Didier Pittet, Lead, WHO First Global Patient Safety Challenge and Director, Infection Control Programme, University of Geneva Hospitals on Wednesday, 19 January 2011.
It forms part of the Hospital’s Infection Control efforts which has won SGH recognition from the World Health Organization (WHO).
The Hospital’s strategy included a system change, from washing to the use of alcohol rubs, as well as ensuring that staff had easy access to hand rub at the point of care. Staff undergo regular and continual training on the 7-steps of hand hygiene. Events such as World Hygiene Day in May and Infection Control Fair in November are also platforms to educate the staff. Reminders come in the form of colourful posters, stickers and buses ads. Anchoring all this is the strong support of the leadership to the importance of hand hygiene in SGH.
