“For his distinguished and outstanding contributions in continuing tertiary education at institutions and to the community in Singapore and the region, particularly in the areas of neonatology, developmental paediatrics, child health and development, welfare and protection.”
On 29 June 2010, Professor Ho Lai Yun, Senior Consultant, Department of Neonatal & Developmental Medicine, was conferred the prestigious National Outstanding Clinician Mentor Award 2010 by the Ministry of Health.
“Many have gone further than they anticipated because someone else made them believe they could. It is good to be the 'wind beneath the wings' to help people develop to their fullest potential and soar to greater heights. It is even better to help those who have fallen get back on their feet, recover their enthusiasm and ambition, and proceed to excel with renewed belief and great confidence,” said Prof Ho.
To all budding mentors at SGH, Prof Ho has these words of advice:
- Mentoring starts with the heart. It is a process that requires perseverance and it is the journey that counts.
- Mentoring involves a brain to pick, a ear to listen and a push in the right direction.
- A mentor must: walk the talk; exude warmth; listen actively; show unconditional regard; encourage and support; be trustworthy; help mentees to align passion and work; be there in difficult times; protect when necessary; nurture creativity; embrace humour; not expect perfection; help turn personal values into practice; offer insights from experience and demonstrate a willingness to be there when needed; celebrate mentees’ achievements and talents and not claim credit or stoop to jealousy; never exploit protégés; and be humble.
The National Outstanding Clinician Mentor Award is a national level award conferred by the Ministry of Health. It recognises individuals with at least 15 years of service in the healthcare industry and health-related work and who have contributed substantially in the training of young clinicians and clinician scientists via mentorship or by virtue of academic positions.
This is the second year that SGH senior clinicians were conferred this award. Last year, Professor Ng Han Seong received the award. Professor Soo Khee Chee of NCCS and Visiting Consultant to our Department of General Surgery was the first recipient of the award in 2008.
