China Health Minister, Prof Chen Zhu shared his insights and wealth of experience in a forum entitled "Synergy Medicine - When East meets West" during his visit to SGH on 22 July. A leading Haematologist and molecular biologist, Prof Chen shared on his pioneering research which spanned more than 20 years, on the introduction of all-trans retinoic acid and arsenic trioxide as effective therapy for acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL), a subtype of acute myeloid leukaemia.
Medical colleagues and members from the Chapter of Haematologists, Academy of Medicine have benefited significantly from Prof Chen's sharing of his personal experience, from basic research to clinical application in the field of haematology.
Dr Linn Yeh Ching, Senior Consultant, Department of Haematology shared SGH 's experience of a clinical trial on the use of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with chronic haematological diseases. This collaboration between SGH and physicians from Bao Zhong Tan TCM Centre was the first that SGH embarked on TCM research where Western standard of assessment and methodology in clinical trials are applied to study the efficacy of TCM.
Prof Chen also shared that traditional Chinese medicine needs to evolve with time and the importance of moving forward together with modern science and Western medicine as well as the collaboration efforts between China and Asean nations. He also noted that Bao Zhong Tang TCM Centre's presence in SGH is a good example of efforts being made in integrating both.
