My family of three is going to Switzerland and Finland next month and January. What should we pack for winter and where in Singapore can we buy them?

Be sure to wear multiple layers of clothes to trap heat, advises Dr Limin Wijaya, consultant at the department of infectious diseases in Singapore General Hospital.

Layering also allows one to remove or add on more clothes when one is indoors or outdoors. As a guide, wear a thermal garment as a base layer and a wind- and water-resistant jacket as the top layer. In between, you can wear a sweater made of cashmere, wool or fleece.

Take along a beanie, scarf, a pair of gloves and wool socks. Get a good pair of waterproof shoes or boots so that the moisture from the ice will not seep through your shoes.

Japanese fashion retailer Uniqlo has winter wear ranging from thermal wear (look for its Heattech range) to pants and jackets.

You can also get winter gear from shops such as Winter Time and Cold Wear.
