Why did class C patient have to pay B2 rates? (The New Paper, 28 February 2011, Pg 15)

28 Feb 2011

MY FATHER was admitted to Singapore General Hospital on Jan 3, and was placed in a transit area till a bed became available.

The next afternoon, he was transferred to a class C ward. He had asked for that because he had been in class C when he was hospitalised earlier.

But when we reached the room, it was so different from what he was in before that my family didn’t feel good about it and asked to upgrade to class B2.

Hospital staff then told me that we could upgrade, but only the bed charges would remain as class C until he was transferred to the B2 room. The other services would be charged at B2 rates for his entire stay, including the time he spent in the transit area.

I don’t understand this policy.

Isn’t it the same doctor who sees everyone, regardless of whether they are going to class C or class A? So why must I pay more when the class that I wanted is not available?

We waited 11/2 days for the class B2 room only to find that it wasn’t air-conditioned like the class C room.

And all the while, we were paying more.

I hope the hospital can look into this matter and give an explanation.
