Touches of colour
Parkinson’s patients build a garden filled with pretty birds with the help of an internationally renowned visual artist and hospital staff
The garden at Singapore General Hospital’s (SGH) Block 5 has a colourful addition to its peaceful surrounds – Birdsongs, an artwork installation of birds made of paper clay.
This pilot art project, designed by Singaporean visual artist Mr Michael Tan, combines nature and art to promote the social, cognitive and muscular wellbeing of patients in the SGH Parkinson’s Disease Support Group.
Birdsongs, inspired by the soothing sounds of birds chirping, began in a workshop where the group created birds from paper clay, which were then coloured using acrylic paint. Mr Tan then installed the finished artwork in the garden at Block 5. Photos documenting the creation of Birdsongs can be viewed at ArtsExpressions, Block 2, Level 1.
Mr Tan, an assistant professor at the School of Art, Design and Media in Nanyang Technological University, is interested in researching issues related to the role of the arts in healthcare. His works have been exhibited both locally and internationally.
