The big cleanup (Singapore Health Issue, March & April 2011)

01 Mar 2011

Some of the flats were filled with things that should have been thrown out long ago. There was rotting food in some places, while others had beds and other furniture crawling with bugs.

These are the homes of elderly people who live on their own, have little family support, and are often too weak or sick to clean regularly.

To help some elderly people – all Singapore General Hospital (SGH) patients – welcome the lunaryear of the Rabbit, 125 members of SGH Volunteer Club spent a Saturday spring cleaning their homes. Groups of eight to 10 volunteers cleaned, washed and painted 13 homes, after which SGH senior management presented each patient a lucky hongbao and gifts of essential household items such as mattresses, pillows, bedsheets and laundry racks. The homes, cleared of clutter,
are safer for patients.

A clean home is healthier for them too.

This was the second time the volunteers had cleaned the homes of needy, elderly patients. Last year, 80 volunteers cleaned the homes of 10 patients.
