22 Oct 2010

GROUP chief executive officer of SingHealth Services, Professor Tan Ser Kiat, is the new president of the Singapore Medical Council (SMC).

Prof Tan, who took over on Tuesday, replaces Professor Ong Yong Yau, a senior consultant in the Respiratory Medicine and Critical Care department of Singapore General Hospital.

During his more than two years as president, Prof Ong initiated several changes, including amendments to the Medical Registration Act, 2010.

The SMC and the Ministry of Health thanked Prof Ong, an orthopaedic surgeon by training, for his “able leadership and contributions” in a statement issued yesterday.

Prof Ong said he was reassured that he would be passing the baton to good hands. He will continue as a council member until his term ends on Nov 5.
