More satisfied with public healthcare institutions: survey

SEVENTY-SIX per cent of patients are satisfied with Singapore's public healthcare institutions - up two percentage points from 2008.
But waiting times still remain a bugbear, according to the 2009 Patient Satisfaction Survey released yesterday by the Ministry of Health (MOH).

The survey showed 23per cent of patients rated their overall satisfaction 'excellent' and 53 percent 'good', for a combined score of 76 per cent.

Among public hospitals, Alexandra Hospital had the highest overall satisfaction rating of 85per cent, beating its 83 per cent score in 2008.

It was followed by KK Hospital (79 per cent) and Singapore General Hospital (78 per cent).

For specialty centres, the Institute of Mental Health was ranked top for patient satisfaction. And 90 per cent of respondents would 'strongly recommend' or be 'likely to recommend' the National Skin Centre to others.

Marine Parade Polyclinic was ranked top among polyclinics for patient satisfaction. Bukit Batok Polyclinic had a 35 per cent score for 'strongly recommend' and 55 percent for 'likely to recommend' which made it the polyclinic patients would most likely recommend to others.

However, waiting time to see a doctor still needs to be improved, the survey revealed.

'The healthcare institutions will have to work harder in this area,' MOH said. 'We have added the number of doctors significantly and will continue to do so, to meet rising expectations.

However, this will also have an impact on operating cost.

Almost 10,000 patients from the public hospitals, national specialty centres and polyclinicsn were polled for the independent survey, which was commissioned by MOH.
