A NURSE has won the National Medical Excellence Awards (NMEA) this year, making it a first for the
profession.
Mrs Nellie Yeo, Chief Quality Officer of the National Healthcare Group (NHG), took the National Outstanding Clinical Quality Activist award - a new category introduced to recognise those who have contributed significantly towards clinical quality and patient safety.
The award in this category was shared with Associate Professor Tan Kok Hian, Chairman of KK Women's and Children Hospital (KKH) Division of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Mrs Yeo and Prof Tan were among eight outstanding healthcare professionals who received the awards from Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Manpower Mr Hawazi Daipi on Tuesday.
This national award, which was started in 2008, recognises the efforts of doctors, clinician-scientists and other healthcare professionals for their work. The recipients of each category received a plaque, a citation and a prize of $10,000.
Former Master of Academy of Medicine, Professor Ho Lai Yun, 61, who played mentor to many young doctors, took the National Outstanding Clinician Mentor Award.
The National Outstanding Clinician Award went to Professor Vathsala Anantharaman from the National University Hospital (NUH) for her work in kidney transplantation; while the National Outstanding Clinician-Scientist Award went to Professor Wong Tien Yin, director of the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI).
The team from the Division of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and the Emergency Medicine Department, NUH, was given the National Clinical Excellence Team Award.
