About Neuropsychology Unit

Established in 1998, the Neuropsychology Unit of the Department of Neurology (NNI-SGH Campus) provides neuropsychological assessment, follow-up and intervention for patients with dementia, stroke, epilepsy, head injury and other brain disorders.


Staffed by Research Psychologists, Clinical Psychologists, and Clinical Neuropsychologists, the unit provides clinical services to patients from the departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Behavioural Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, and Rehabilitation Medicine, in diagnostic formulation, cognitive monitoring, and therapeutic intervention. The unit also provides research support in psychometric testing for clinical trials and other hospital-based research projects.



Teaching and Training

The unit provides ongoing opportunities for students and allied health professionals to observe neuropsychological examination and cognitive testing. Advanced training in neuropsychological testing procedures and case formulation is offered to Psychologists with a special interest in Clinical Neuropsychology.

The unit conducts regular in-house journal club meetings, case discussions, and staff training courses in the clinical applications of neuropsychological knowledge. Staff of the unit is actively involved in inter-departmental training programmes, patient support groups, and community projects.


Research

-    Participation in international clinical trials for dementia and stroke
        
-    Development and validation of cognitive test instruments for local populations

        -    Cross-cultural neuropsychological testing

Longitudinal study of cognition in normal aging

Cognitive recovery and post-concussion symptoms in mild head injury

Assessing neuropsychological functions in normal elderly and dementia patients
