Ultrasound is a valuable and safe tool to complement our diagnostic services. Here at SGH, we have established a team of trained and dedicated ultrasonists to provide for your health care needs.
Your doctor may schedule you for an ultrasound scan. Scans may be performed in the following ways:
- Abdominal Scan
This usually requires a full bladder for the best effect.
- Vaginal Scan
This scan does not require a full bladder to be performed, but may not be suitable for all women. Please let your ultrasonist know if you have never had a vaginal examination before.
Obstetric Scans for Pregnant Mums Scans in pregnancy may be done for many reasons:
- Simple Scan
This is done to establish fetal viability or dates.
- Screening Scan
This allows the doctor to look for obvious abnormalities of the fetus as well as for fetal growth.
- Anomaly Scan
This is a more detailed assessment of the fetus, usually performed on mothers who are at risk of fetal abnormalities or where an abnormality has been detected during an earlier screening scan.
- Specialised Scan
This looks at fetal blood flow using specialised ultrasound machines.
- Gynaecologic Scans
These scans are performed to look at the uterus and ovaries as well as any other masses that may be present in the pelvis such as fibroids and cysts.
- Nuchal Translucency
Nuchal translucency (NT) is the collectionof fluid under the skin behind the neck of fetuses at 11 to 13+6 weeks. This test allows the doctor to screen for fetuses with choromosomal abnormalities, cardiac defects and many genetic syndromes.
