The department took over the running of the Medical Care Unit (MICU) from May 1995 with the goals of providing state of the art Critical Care Medicine.
The MICU has 8 individual rooms each equipped with computerised physiological monitoring systems. A variety of sophisticated ventilatory techniques are available including noninvasive ventilation for acute respiratory failure and pressure control ventilation for ARDS. Patient types include sepsis, septic shock, pulmonary oedema and ARDS. A unique feature of this ICU not found in any other ICU in this country is the Body Cooling Unit which is used for patients with Heat Disorders. APACHE II Scoring is used routinely to monitor patient acuity trends, outcomes and ICU performance.
The unit is staffed by intensivists complemented by residents, critical care nurses, respiratory therapists, physiotherapists and pharmacists.

Current ongoing research activities include those on ICU Outcome, noninvasive ventilation, usuage of pulmonary artery catheters and weaning from mechanical ventilation.
